The Purpose of Online Coupons

If you do an internet search on online coupons, you may be surprised at the number of results you get. Online coupons are offered by merchants who sell their wares online via websites, and by merchants who sell in traditional brick and mortar stores as well. When you shop online, you can use your online coupons that you have found at that vendor’s site, often resulting in some great savings for you. You can also find and print out coupons for your favorite brick and mortar stores, and these are scanned as you go through the checkout line, taking the discount off of your total. The only downside to printable coupons is that some merchants do not accept them, especially if they have to manually enter them in. Some of the bar codes on these coupons are not recognizable to the scanners used in many retail stores.

Coupons found online provide benefits both to the consumer and to the merchants. Consumers get a break on items that they need, often saving quite a bit of money, which is a good thing considering today’s economy. Sellers don’t have to worry about spending extra money on advertising, since consumers already need the products they are selling, and are more likely to buy them since there are coupons available. The coupons don’t have to be printed in flyers and newspapers for the consumers to use; they simply get them straight from the merchant’s website. In fact, online coupons are starting to replace some of the more traditional advertising campaigns, serving a dual purpose for the merchants who offer them. A merchant can simply use software to add or take out coupons with the click of a button, without needing to pay an advertising firm or printer to do the work for them. Merchants can choose when they want to post coupons, and how long they want them to be good for. If they have mailing lists, which most online vendors do, they can send emails to their customers, letting them know that the coupons are available for download, often boosting their sales. The customer then decides whether or not to purchase the product, often based on the fact that the coupon would save them money, even if they don’t expressly need the product at the present time. People often forget that these coupons, just as printed coupons, have expiration dates, and that no vendor is required to take a coupon after that date.

Customers don’t have to worry about trying to cut coupons out of the paper, and then save them, pulling them out again when they are at the store, if they don’t forget about them altogether. How frustrating it can be to save a coupon, and then find it later, only to realize that it is past the expiration date!

Merchants also use online coupons to get and increase traffic to their website. The more traffic that comes to the site, the more profit potential they have, especially if they have brought customers there with great money saving coupons.

Brick and mortar merchants also benefit from online coupons, as they often get new customers into their store, if for no other reason than to purchase the item featured on their coupon.
