Merchants can choose when they want to post coupons, and how long they want them to be good for. If they have mailing lists, which most online vendors do, they can send emails to their customers, letting them know that the coupons are available for download, often boosting their sales. The customer then decides whether or not to purchase the product, often based on the fact that the coupon would save them money, even if they don�t expressly need the product at the present time. People often forget that these coupons, just as printed coupons, have expiration dates, and that no vendor is required to take a coupon after that date.

Customers don�t have to worry about trying to cut coupons out of the paper, and then save them, pulling them out again when they are at the store, if they don�t forget about them altogether. How frustrating it can be to save a coupon, and then find it later, only to realize that it is past the expiration date!

Merchants also use online coupons to get and increase traffic to their website. The more traffic that comes to the site, the more profit potential they have, especially if they have brought customers there with great money saving coupons.

Brick and mortar merchants also benefit from online coupons, as they often get new customers into their store, if for no other reason than to purchase the item featured on their coupon.
